[Teacher's Blog] Siblings
If you’re a student at NOVA online, you probably already know that all of our English teachers are from the Philippines.
Aside from improving your English skills, learning about the culture of English speakers from different parts of the world can give you fresh insights and make your communication even more natural.
Siblings are among the most significant people in our lives, serving as our first friends, teammates, and competitors. Growing up together means sharing unique bonds built on childhood adventures, laughter, and disagreements.
Family structures vary across cultures, such as large Filipino families compared to smaller Japanese households. The core values of mutual respect and support remain universal. Ultimately, our unique personalities and shared history shape how we express love and resolve conflicts with our brothers and sisters.
Siblings By Teacher Jayme
In Philippines, we usually call our older siblings "Kuya" for an older brother and "Ate" for an older sister while, for our younger siblings, we simply call them by their names or say "Inday or Dai” (younger sister) and “Dodong or Dong” (younger brother). These terms show the close family values and respect that are important in Filipino culture.
Growing up with seven siblings can be tough because we must share attention, responsibilities, and resources but it also fosters teamwork. We are a nuclear family with both of our parents raising us together. Having a big family means there is always someone to talk to, laugh with, and support. I am the second child in the family, and I am the eldest daughter among my siblings. My “Kuya” and I have a significant age gap, so we grew up having different experiences and interests; despite this, I still look up to him. As the “Ate”, I try my best to guide and take care of my younger siblings, set a good example, and be someone they can rely on.
One of my favorite childhood memories is playing outside together until sunset, creating simple games with our neighbors and siblings. Another cherished memory is eating meals together and celebrating birthdays, Christmas, and New Year's at home. We would laugh, share stories, and enjoy each other's company. These simple moments are the memories I treasure the most.
In the end, having seven siblings has made my life more meaningful. They have taught me the importance of love, responsibility, teamwork, and forgiveness. No matter where life takes us, I know that my brothers and sisters will always be one of my greatest sources of strength and happiness.

Hey there! My name is teacher Jayme and I'm from Philippines.
