If you’re a student at NOVA online, you probably already know that all of our English teachers are from the Philippines.
Aside from improving your English skills, learning about the culture of English speakers from different parts of the world can give you fresh insights and make your communication even more natural.
When you visit the Philippines, don’t miss its vibrant street food culture—often called “pagkaing pangmasa” or food for everyone. Loved by both locals and travelers, it stands out for its affordability, wide variety, and bold flavors. From grilled skewers to crispy fried snacks, many are paired with tangy vinegar dips that make every bite exciting.

With so many choices, you can enjoy skewered meats or quick bites like Kwek-kwek; a beloved Filipino street food featuring hard-boiled quail eggs dipped in a bright orange batter and deep-fried until crispy. Often sold on street corners near schools, it is commonly served hot with a, sweet-and-sour, or spicy vinegar dipping sauce., Fish Balls, and Squid Balls.
Feeling adventurous? Try local delicacies like Balut [a fertilized developing egg embryo that is boiled or steamed and eaten from the shell. Often paired with spicy vinegar.], or Adidas; consisting of grilled or braised chicken feet —unique yet flavorful favorites.

To beat the heat, refresh yourself with Samalamig; a collective term for various Filipino sweet chilled beverages that usually include jelly-like ingredients., Fresh Coconut Juice, or desserts like Halo-halo; a shaved ice dessert featuring layers of sweet ingredients, beans, fruits, and evaporated milk, typically topped with ube ice cream and leche flan., Sorbetes; a traditional ice cream, uniquely made with coconut milk and/or carabao milk., and Mais con yelo; a dessert made of sweet corn, shaved ice, milk, and sugar.
