If you’re a student at NOVA online, you probably already know that all of our English teachers are from the Philippines.

Aside from improving your English skills, learning about the culture of English speakers from different parts of the world can give you fresh insights and make your communication even more natural.

When some other foreigners hear that you came from the Philippines, they generally think that you are kind and have a soft heart. Yes, probably true because Filipinos have their own way of how they care for someone. We care deeply about our family, friends, acquaintances, and even to the people that we only meet briefly.

What are Filipino people like? By Teacher Kate

Filipinos are naturally known for our hospitality, where we warmly welcome our guests as if they were our own family regardless of where they are from. We provide them with food, entertainment, and, if there’s time, a tour around the local destinations, and you can also take home "pasalubong," or souvenirs.

Then, we're really friendly towards other people or other races; it's like you've been friends for ages. Beyond being naturally welcoming, we 'Filipinos' consistently demonstrate a remarkable ability to connect with others through our vibrant energy or being cheerful that captivates and charms other people, deep-seated respect for elders, and a genuine willingness to share whatever we have with those around us.

In terms of family, we're really known for having strong family ties. We didn't leave our parents unless we were married, or even if we got married, we still look after them, including our siblings and grandparents. Moreover, despite difficulties in life, we remain resilient and optimistic. We still find joy and hope and to look at the brighter side of things. This is because we have strong faith and are religious as well. We're also hardworking, flexible, and can adapt to what's in front of us. Then, without expecting return, we also value helping other people or our neighbors, we call it "Bayanihan”.

Visiting the Philippines really changes your perspective about life. Here, people appreciate even the simplest things, and there’s a sense of joy in everyday moments. Whether it’s through music, colorful festivals, or lively fiestas, you can feel how deeply people value connection, family, and community. It reminds you that happiness doesn’t always come from having more but from appreciating what you already have. By the time you leave our country, you’ll carry lots of beautiful memories with you, something lighter that will make you more grateful, and more focused on what truly matters.
