Aside from improving your English skills, learning about the culture of English speakers from different parts of the world can give you fresh insights and make your communication even more natural.


For many pet owners, pets are not just companions—they are family. Yet there was a time when bringing them into public places, especially shopping malls, was almost unthinkable.


Over the past decade, Cebu has witnessed a remarkable transformation in how businesses and communities embrace pets, creating more inclusive spaces for both owners and their furry companions. Looking back, one mall played a pioneering role in this change and helped redefine what it meant to be a truly pet-friendly city.

I still remember back in 2010, Parkmall Cebu was the very first mall to open its doors to pets. It was hard to believe because this initiative was new and the first of its kind in Cebu.


At that time, I was still active in dog rescue and local shelter support, so I quickly informed our small community and proudly announced it. We were all excited and felt understood as pet owners. We all know how much of a struggle it is to raise, rescue, and even bring pets to malls.


It was nearly impossible before because almost all establishments at that time were very strict about sanitation, safety, and property policies, and they did not want any disturbance caused by pets. But it was really true. We went there with complete kits all geared up and ready to celebrate our newfound freedom. It did not disappoint at all. We were warmly welcomed with open arms. Finally, a mall that accepts pets. We roamed inside the mall, dined in the al fresco area, and ended the day with refreshments and happy memories.

Cebuano residents responded to this breakthrough with enthusiasm and excitement, and it quickly went viral. Photos and videos were posted all over the internet and social media.


We proudly highlighted this initiative, supported by dedicated spaces and free pet waste bags to help keep the property clean and well-maintained. After Parkmall, everything became phenomenal and encouraged several establishments to take notice of this unprecedented development. Several malls in Cebu gradually became more pet-friendly, such as Ayala Center Cebu, Ayala Malls Central Bloc, SM Seaside City Cebu, and IL Corso Filinvest.


Over time, more modern pet-friendly policies and outdoor dining spaces were introduced, which were greatly appreciated by residents of Cebu City. It slowly changed the way people viewed pets in public areas, making them more accepted in everyday life. This shift also encouraged responsible pet ownership, as owners became more mindful of cleanliness, behavior, and respect for shared spaces.


Pet-friendly malls and public spaces in Cebu can have noticeable psychological and social benefits for residents. Unfortunately, some parts of the world are not yet open to adapting to these changes, such as Japan, Singapore, and other countries.
