New Year Celebration

If you’re a student at NOVA online, you probably already know that all of our English teachers are from the Philippines.

Aside from improving your English skills, learning about the culture of English speakers from different parts of the world can give you fresh insights and make your communication even more natural.

I want to start with a simple question: When you hear the word "New Year", what comes to your mind? Some may think about plenty of food, others of parties, and some goals and reflection, such as New Year’s resolutions. For many, it is a mix of these experiences.

New Year is one of the most anticipated celebrations in the Philippines and around the world. People welcome it with joy because it marks the end of the previous year and the beginning of a fresh start. No matter what traditions or beliefs we follow, the feeling of happiness is something we all share during this time.

Every celebration requires preparation, and New Year is no exception. Even though it lasts only a day, people prepare for it ahead of time.

On December 31, many families are busy buying groceries, decorating, and preparing fireworks. In cities, those who can afford it set off fireworks at night, while in some rural areas, people ready their motorcycles to make noise at midnight. The goal is simply to welcome the year with excitement and sound.

Mothers often prepare twelve kinds of fruits because these are believed to bring blessings and good fortune. Common choices include oranges, grapes, pomelos, and watermelons. Food for Media Noche is also an important part of the preparation. Media Noche is what we call the dinner we prepare on New Year’s Eve.
